Applying air to the actuator chamber pushes a piston that compresses the friction disc against the rotor, creating the braking force through friction. The torque generated is proportional to the air pressure applied, which means the braking force can be modulated by adjusting the supply pressure within the operating range.<\/p>\n<p>When the air supply is cut or vented, return springs push the friction elements apart, releasing the brake and allowing free shaft rotation. When air pressure is supplied to the actuator, the friction disc is pressed against the braking surface, generating the braking torque and stopping the shaft. When air pressure is removed, integrated springs retract the friction disc, and the shaft rotates freely.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\">This behaviour makes the FNA a controlled-stop brake, suited to applications where braking is a normal operational function rather than a safety fallback. It is not a fail-safe device: loss of air pressure releases the brake, not engages it.
